Welcome Back Family! I hope you all have missed me because I have missed you! Today's blog will be informal, so get ready and put your seatbelts on. We will be discussing the genre of my Portfolio Project. Genre is very important because it allows the audience to categorize the movie and know what to expect from it. With that being said, let's hope right into it!
For those of you that do not know, genre basically means a specific type of music, film, or writing. Some film genres are drama, science fiction, action, fantasy, romance, etc. However, we will only be focusing on thriller and drama. These are the two genres of my film! Thriller and drama are two well-known genres that are used across world-wide productions.
Thriller ...
Thriller is a genre of fiction with various subgenres. Theses include horror, crime, and detective fiction. Thrillers are often characterized and defined by the moods they illustrate, giving their audience heightened feelings of excitement, surprise, anticipation, suspense, and anxiety. Additionally, thrillers take their audience on a ride from beginning to end. Thrillers do a great job at creating tension with intriguing suspense. As a result, audiences are kept asking questions until the film ends.
Suspense is one of the main components of the thriller genre. Suspense allows the viewer to experience an intense sense of excitement mixed with tension and apprehension. Suspense is what causes the audience to wonder during the movie. It is a feeling that is based off of unpredictability. Regarding thriller movies, it is essential that the audience experiences emotions out of the "norm." Meaning, the audience is intrigued to see what happens next and is aroused by the unknown. Suspense is the key way to accomplishing this.
Now that we have covered thriller as a whole, we need to uncover its subgenres. You might be asking yourself, "What is a subgenre?" Well, good thing I am here to explain that to you. A subgenre is a category that is a subdivision of a larger genre. This means that there are various sections or categories throughout the thriller genre. Some of these sections are spy thriller, action-adventure thriller, historical thriller, etc. Even though there are many different types of thriller, all of them have common ground. According to James Patterson, "What gives the variety of thrillers common ground is the intensity of emotions they create, particularly those of apprehension and exhilaration, of excitement and breathlessness, all designed to generate that all-important thrill. By definition, if a thriller doesn't thrill, it's not doing its job."In other words, no matter what kind of thriller a movie illustrates, the film will always include suspense or excitement.

Drama ...
As mentioned before, Drama is very popular and/or well-known. Throughout this genre, stories have high stakes and various conflicts. This genre is extremely plot driven and demands that every scene or character moves in an orderly fashion. Dramas follow a concise narrative plot structure. This structure illustrates real-life scenarios with emotionally-driven characters. Main components of this genre are characters, plot, thoughts, diction, spectacle, and melody.
Drama is similar to thriller. This is because both include subgenres. These are historical drama, costume drama, romantic drama, teen drama, medical drama, docudrama, etc. Some examples of dramatic films are 'Citizen Kane' (1941), 'The Godfather' (1972), and 'The Social Network' (2010). Each of these are great examples of the subgenres/genre of Drama. Make sure to check them out whenever you have the chance! Even though there are many different subgenres for drama, all of them are similar. Each subgenre illustrates major character development and a storyline that includes a climax or obstacle to overcome. These are essential components of the Drama film genre.
