HEYOO! I have missed you guys. I hope you all have missed me too :). On my last blog post, I discussed and explained the genres of my film. However, let's transition back to one of my blog posts from the first week. For those that do not remember, I mentioned three films that were similar and good representations of the topic of my Portfolio Project. These films were YOU, The Perfect Guy, and Fatal Affair. Today, I will be doing a deep analysis of each one of these films. This will give you guys a better understanding of the thriller/drama genre. In addition, it will provide you all with examples of what I might try to portray in my Portfolio Project. With that being said, lets begin...
1. YOU
YOU is a psychological thriller television series. This series is based on the books by Caroline Kepnes. Additionally, it was developed by Sera Gamble/Greg Berlanti and produced by Alloy Entertainment. YOU follows a young man who has a tendency to become obsessed with whoever he has an interest in. In other words, the show illustrates a young man that goes to extreme measures to put himself into the lives of those he is mesmerized by.
Many themes can be explored throughout YOU. These are the role social media plays in our relationships with other people, the association between love and control, and the abuse that women face in relationships. YOU lets the audience in on the perspective of the abuser or the one who is completing terrible actions. The audience is able to see and learn about the mind of a person that is obsessive.
YOU speaks for modern society. In our society, it is reasonable to be afraid of being watched or analyzed at any moment. Lately, it has become easier for someone to observe the life of anyone they choose. The evolution of technology is the cause of this. The paranoia we experience about these aspects of technology plays into YOU. The main character of YOU (Joe Goldberg) uses technology to stalk whoever he has an interest in. Social Media is one of the main ways Joe becomes obsessive and takes action. The audience is able to see how technology helps him fulfill his stalker tendencies. YOU is an amazing representation of the thriller genre.
2. The Perfect Guy
The Perfect Guy is a movie that is based off the perspective of a women who has a man that is obsessed with her. To begin, lets go over the plot of the film. After breaking up with her boyfriend, a professional women gets involved with a man who seems "perfect." The women's name is Leah Vaughn and the man she meets is named Carter Duncan. Things between them go very smoothly until one night, Carter attacks an innocent man. This attack startled Leah, showing Carter's true colors. On the same night of the attack, Leah decides to break up with Carter. After this happens, Carter becomes very obsessive and controlling over Leah.
The Perfect Guy is a film that leads with suspense. The audience is left asking questions throughout the entire duration of the movie. Additionally, the movie includes many jump scares that leaves viewers startled. You guys might be wondering, "How does this movie illustrate Drama as well?" Well, to answer your question, this movie illustrates Drama because the movie follows a specific plot. This plot includes a climax and the main character has various emotional moments.
The Perfect Guy is a perfect example of a film that showcases the thriller and drama genre. As the audience experiences suspense, they also get to experience vehemence. Vehemence is another word for passion! The audience is able to understand what Leah is feeling and experience those emotions with her. Viewers are taken on a ride with no certain destination, but can clearly understand what the main character is feeling at any moment. This is a key example of thriller and drama throughout a film!
3. Fatal Affair
Fatal Affair is a recent movie that portrays a women's experience with an obsessive man. This film was released on Netflix in 2020. As Ellie (main character) tries to control her marriage, she encounters an old friend (David). David reveals that he has feelings for her and becomes very attached to Ellie. David's actions are based on an obsessive drive to have Ellie all for himself.
The audience is able to see how David alters Ellie's life. The audience is able to watch and view the motive of David's actions. Throughout the film, many scenes are led with suspense. As a result, the audience never knows what is to come next. As mentioned time and time before, suspense is a crucial part of the thriller genre. Any movie that includes thriller, includes suspense!
Fatal Affair is a good representation of movies that do not follow the "norm." The movies begins with a women in a stable relationship. As the film continues, it shows this women's life beginning to unravel. What seemed to be stable, is in chaos. What seemed to be perfect, is broken. What seemed to be joyous, is miserable. This is exactly the methodology I want to portray in my Portfolio Project! It is my intention to go against the "norm" and cause my viewers to think outside the box. Whew, that was a lot for today ... See you guys on the next post and stay safe, XOXO.
